Let's talk about Co-washing

Co-Washing: The Secret to Softer, Happier Curls

(And a beautiful solution for very dry hair)

Co-washing, quite simply, means washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. But not just any conditioner will do. It needs to be a clean, pure, moisturising formula that can gently cleanse while nourishing the hair at the same time.

Co-washing is particularly beneficial for dry, thirsty hair, which is most often curly hair of all types. Curls naturally struggle to hold onto moisture, so they need extra care to stay soft, defined and manageable. However, co-washing can also work beautifully for other dry hair types, including thick, wiry hair and many grey hair types, which naturally become drier over time.

When done correctly, co-washing helps hair feel softer, more hydrated and much easier to manage, all while protecting the natural oils your hair truly needs.

How to Do a Co-Wash

Co-washing is wonderfully simple. It starts with switching your usual cleanser for our 4-in-1 Conditioner, one of our best-selling products for very good reason. It is incredibly versatile, and co-washing is one of its cleverest uses.

Like all our products, it is created without heavy plastic-based emulsifiers that coat the hair, weigh it down and contribute to environmental harm. Instead, it gently cleanses while deeply moisturising both the hair and the scalp.

You will not get any lather when co-washing, and that is completely normal. The focus should be on how the product is applied.

Apply the conditioner to wet hair, concentrating first on the roots and mid-lengths. Massage it into the scalp just as you would with shampoo. Take your time here. Massaging the scalp encourages circulation and allows the conditioner to soothe and comfort the scalp.

Then gently work the conditioner through the lengths of the hair. Because this formula moisturises as it cleans, it softens the hair while lifting away daily buildup.

As a general rule, we do not recommend taking shampoo through the lengths of the hair. The lengths rarely need cleansing. Rinsing shampoo from the roots is usually enough to refresh the lengths, while the conditioning phase of your routine supports the rest of the hair beautifully.

Meet Laura

Laura began her Tabitha JK Organic Hair Care journey just four months ago, and the difference in her hair is already clear. Her curls are becoming easier to manage, noticeably softer and deeply nourished. Even her colour looks more vibrant and full of life.

Her transformation is a lovely example of what can happen when curls are given the moisture and care they truly need.

Laura’s Hair Ritual

Laura keeps her routine beautifully simple. Just two products give her everything she needs to care for her curls.

She begins with pre-wash oiling using our Curly and Dry Scented Organic Hair Oil, applying around a quarter of a pump daily. This helps protect her curls and maintain moisture throughout the day.

Laura works outdoors, so she enjoys washing her hair at the end of the day and allowing it to dry naturally.

For her co-wash, she applies the 4-in-1 Conditioner to wet hair and gently combs it through. After a light rinse, she softly squeezes her hair with a towel, taking care not to disturb the natural curl pattern.

Next, she applies a small amount of the 4-in-1 Conditioner as a leave-in treatment. Using her hands, she gently works the product through the hair, opening her fingers to softly rake the curls into larger, defined sections.

The result is beautifully hydrated, defined curls that feel soft, manageable and full of life.
