Step 1 - Oil balancing
We all need Scented organic hair oil - ‘Youth dew for hair’. Full of rich, nourishing organic oils and scented with my signature Amber Rose aromatherapy scent.
Our hair needs to be moisturised and we need to find a routine where by we achieve the right moisture balance for our hair type and then maintain that balance. If your hair feels lifeless or dehydrated, you are not on your own, this is very common in mid-life, but don’t dismay, it is really easy to fix this naturally. I created this oil to mimic the acid mantle, the protective layer that our hair and skin needs to be happy and healthy. It will prepare the hair to better retain the moisture level, allowing the hair to come back to life, moving freely with natural life and lustre.
How to use: Apply once a week or twice for very dry hair. Apply one pump to dry (not wet) hair and sleep in it over night, simply wash the hair the following morning focussing on the root area and conditioner the hair as normal.
Note: less is more here, do not be tempted to apply lots of the oil as you are just wasting it.
Step 2 - Correct cleansing - how to wash your hair
The best tip I can give you is to ‘stop washing the life out of your hair’, it is really important to use a washing product that is gentle and nourishing to the hair and scalp.
When washing the hair do focus on the scalp and root area, you don’t need to lather through the length of the hair, this only dehydrates the hair further. Your hair needs moisture, the focus should always be on building moisture, therefore building life and lustre to the hair to bring it back to life. The Tabitha James Kraan range does not contain any silicones or liquid plastics, only pure moisture that will smooth and nourish the hair allowing in to move freely and become malleable and shiny.
3 ways to wash your hair in midlife.
Hair that is out of balance;
Organic hair cleanser - this product is my problem solver, it is designed to rebalance the scalp, harmonising with your body to rebalance the natural oil production. If your hair and/or scalp are dry this washing product is for you as it will nourish the scalp and hair at the roots.
Hair that is dull and lacks lustre;
Clean shampoo - this product is a gentle and mild way to wash your hair and scalp, again focus on the root area when washing and allow the ingredients to nourish your scalp without stripping.
Hair that is very dry;
Co-washing with 4-1 conditioner - When you condition the hair after the Clean Shampoo or Organic Hair Cleanser you will be cleaning and reviving the hair with the moisturising properties of the 4-1 conditioner. If you have curls or extremely dry hair you can wash the hair with 4-1 conditioner this is called Co-washing (conditioning wash). Just go through the motions of a normal hair wash but use the 4-1 conditioner instead and prepare to be amazed at the results.
Step 2 moisture layering - the fabric of hair needs moisture as It has a similar structure to a natural sponge and as such needs moisture to look healthy and full of life. When we achieve the right moisture balance the hair will come alive and be very easy to work with, it will become malleable and look and feel healthy and shiny. Moisture does evaporate from hair in warm environments so multiple applications give you the flexibility to support the hair to look at feel at its best more of the time.
I designed two hair moisturisers that are easy and simple to apply.
Step 3 - Conditioning
4-1 conditioner - This product is a light, multi functional hair moisturiser as it is designed to be layered.
- Detangle your hair in the shower, and apply as a leave-in conditioner to support the weakest areas.
- Add heat protection for styling and dressing the hair, apple 3-6 pumps and dry into the hair, use 1 pump to finish and dress the hair.
- Hair moisturiser, apply to style and refresh the hair in-between washes anytime the hair is not looking and feeling nourished. Be as generous as you need to as this will not weigh the hair down or make it look greasy, start with one pump and add more if required
- Use as a co-wash for dry hair and curls, this is all these hair types need to nourish and refresh the hair for styling.
Clean Conditioner - the instant hair mask. This product is for you if you have persistent dry areas of the hair and for curls. It is going to deeply nourish the hair exactly where you put it, so use it to even out the smoothness in the hair, applying it only to the hair that needs more moisture because it is feeling dry, dehydrated, brittle or tangly. This product provides a deep hit of moisture, it is designed for you to zone your application so apply it only where the hair is dry or dehydrated. It is very rich and will instantly absorb into the hair on application injecting moisture deep into the hair.
For curly hair or dressing short dry hair try adding a little (1cm) to the hair when wet and leaving it in
To apply - Zone your application to the dry and dehydrated areas and use about at 2cm diameter of product or less for shorter hair lengths.
For curly hair or dressing short dry hair try adding a little (1cm) to the hair when wet as a leave-in for a very deep moisture boost.
Step 4 - Dry Shampoo
"It was a classic mid-life mop of fast-encroaching grey, coarse and dry, frizzy and brittle. Now two years into my TJK journey, my hair is longer, thicker and happier than at any time since my 20s."
